Several times I had no sound and found the Then in your multimedia folder run "Pulse Audio Volume Control" and check that the proper output is set (headphone vs speakers). Pulseaudio's volume control can help too: If they still are failing, install the drivers for ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities. Then restart your computer and see if the keys work properly. It's also good to install/or use the sound mixer your desktop uses and check it for levels (KDE -> Kmixer gnome -> ? ) I only use KDE4 right now, but there should be a mixer in Gnomes multimedia area.
